Causes of hair loss in men

Causes of hair loss in men

Hair loss in men usually follows a recognizable pattern, but not always the same cause. A correct assessment is the basis of any good treatment plan.

Hereditary hair loss

The most common form is androgenetic alopecia. Hair follicles on the crown and temples are sensitive to the hormone DHT and gradually shrink. The hair at the back and sides is usually less sensitive; therefore, that zone is used as a donor area.

Other causes

Stress, illness, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, certain medications or crash diets can cause temporary diffuse hair loss. In the event of sudden bald patches or an irritated scalp, an examination by a doctor or dermatologist is recommended first.

When should you seek advice?

If you notice your hairline receding or the crown becoming thinner, a consultation helps to map out the pattern, the donor area, and the possibilities. A transplant is not always the first step; sometimes monitoring or supportive treatment is wiser.
